How European roulette works — without a table to spin on this site

Single-zero layout: pockets 0 to 36
European roulette uses one green zero and the integers 1 through 36. That is thirty-seven pockets in total. Each pocket is equally likely on a fair spin. Colours alternate red and black on the numbered pockets; zero is green and sits outside the red/black even-money bets.
American-style wheels add a second green pocket marked 00, which raises the house edge. This guide sticks to the European single-zero layout because it is the clearer teaching model and the one most often quoted in UK casino rooms.
The modern single-zero European wheel — thirty-seven pockets from 0 to 36 — was popularised in nineteenth-century continental casinos, notably after François Blanc developed the Monte Carlo operation in the 1860s. Removing the double zero cut the house edge compared with the older double-zero layout.
Inside bets and outside bets
Inside bets
Inside bets sit on the numbered grid. They cover fewer pockets and pay higher multiples if they hit.
- Straight-up — one number, including 0.
- Split — two adjacent numbers on the grid.
- Street — a row of three numbers.
- Corner (square) — four numbers meeting at a corner.
- Six-line — two adjacent streets (six numbers).
Outside bets
Outside bets cover larger groups and pay less. Common ones:
- Dozen — 1–12, 13–24 or 25–36.
- Column — one of the three vertical columns on the layout.
- Even money — red or black, odd or even, low (1–18) or high (19–36). Zero loses these bets under standard European rules.
Correct European roulette odds
Payouts below are the long-standing casino ratios for a winning bet of one unit (stake returned separately from the profit multiple in some house presentations; the ratios shown are the standard profit odds quoted on tables).

On a fair European wheel the chance of any single pocket is 1 in 37. A straight-up win pays 35:1, not 36:1, which is where the house edge comes from. Even-money bets cover 18 pockets and lose on zero, so they are not coin-flip bets either.
Each spin stands alone
